Who is the course suitable for

This course is ideal for people with combined visual and hearing impairments who want to learn how to work better with an interpreter/companion.

Course content and objectives

The course will give you increased knowledge about the use of an interpreter/companion and how to use this aid. You will have knowledge of:

  • Rights and opportunities: Introduction to the role of interpreter/companion for people with visual and hearing impairments, rights and opportunities
  • Optimal use of interpreters and escorts: different forms of communication, different needs and different interpreters
  • Communication techniques: Practical exercises in using an interpreter/companion
  • Barriers and strategies: strategies to overcome communication barriers
  • Lessons learnt: Develop good knowledge of how interpreters and companions can support you in your everyday life. Tips and experience sharing for effective co-operation with interpreters/escorts
