Activity, insight and practice - a unique collaboration with the country's interpreting programmes
Every autumn, participants with combined visual and hearing impairments gather for an active and educational course at Eikholt. At the same time, interpreting students from three of the country's interpreting programmes gain valuable practice in real situations - as interpreters and companions.
The course "Activity in theory and practice" is a collaborative project between Eikholt and:
- Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)
- Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet)
- Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
Through a week of physical activity, academic lectures and social experiences, the course participants get both refreshment and fellowship - at the same time as the students get to try out practical work as an interpreter/companion. This gives them insight into deafblindness and experience of communication and interaction in varied and realistic situations.

"The way I see it, the collaboration with the interpreting programmes and the internship here at Eikholt allows us to spread expertise, insight and experience in a targeted and effective way that benefits people with deafblindness all over the country when the students eventually enter professional life."
- Programme manager at Eikholt
A course with many dimensions
The course includes:
- Organised physical activities such as yoga, boating, climbing, gymnastics and much more - often something participants have never tried before
- Lectures on current topics
- Social activities and communities
- Guidance and support from the interpreting students
Participants actively contribute to the students' learning, and the course provides an arena where theory meets practice - to the benefit of both parties.
Glimpses from the course
A practice arena with meaning
For many years, Eikholt has been the practice arena for interpreting programmes. This collaboration strengthens expertise in the field and helps to ensure that future interpreters are better equipped to meet the needs of people with combined sensory loss.
