Engaged students on Eikholt-visits

In connection with the Research Days 2026, Eikholt visitors were welcomed by students from the 5th grade at Konnerud school. The engaged students were able to explore, collaborate, and experience new ways to use their senses in various activities. It was two educational hours!

Activity trail – What did the students learn on the research day?

Almost 50 students participated in an activity trail with prepared tasks. Here, they learned, among other things, how the hearing and visual senses work together.

Here is an excerpt of what the students experienced at various stations:

At the first station, lectures were given on the topic "Ears and eyes – How do they work together?" for attentive students.

At station 2, the students got to use many tools and made friends with sign language and being able to recognize objects without using the eyes.

Station 3 was about being safely accompanied by a fellow student without using sight. The students experienced how important it is to have trust in others when both sight and hearing are impaired, and increased their understanding of others' challenges. In the photo you see two students practicing.

The last station was about learning simple signs in sign language. They practiced, among other things, communicating their name sign, which the students enjoyed very much!  

In the end, all the students gathered in Ragnhild Kaata’s house. The day was summarized and the students were able to share what they had learned during the day. We at the school Eikholt were impressed by how much the students had to say!

For the school and Eikholt for this research day, this is part of the work of learning what it means to be unable to see and hear like others; how we can show trust and include each other; and how to strengthen the students’ knowledge of the local environment. 

The Research Day, a national festival

The Research Days are a national festival of outreach and educational activities where children and adults can explore, try things out for themselves, and experience research in new ways. This year’s theme is to explore what trust means, why it is important in society, and how we can nurture it – both among people and in terms of knowledge and research.
