Audiographer

In my final year of the audiography programme, I had an internship at Eikholt. When I received a job offer as a newly qualified audiologist, I packed my bags and moved to Drammen. Working as a counsellor at Eikholt is incredibly varied and exciting. The professional environment is characterised by skilled and committed people who are passionate about their subjects. 

"The best thing about my job is all the great users I meet. When I organise hearing courses, I have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with users, sometimes several days. With so much time on your hands, you can do all the things you wouldn't otherwise have time to do, and try out things in practice that you've only read about in the literature. 

The courses at Eikholt are very often interdisciplinary and run together with counsellors in other fields. Collaborating on courses in this way means that I learn a lot about vision, mobility, ICT, Braille and all sorts of other things that I knew nothing about before I started working at Eikholt. There's no getting away from the fact that the job involves a lot of paperwork and planning, but it's pretty great to be able to follow a user from the first enquiry, to courses at Eikholt and then local support after the user has gone home. 

Even though I'm an audiologist and mainly work with hearing and courses on hearing, I have great opportunities to influence my own working day. There's always some kind of research and innovation project going on, and as an employee you're often involved. You can also initiate your own projects. For example, I spent a lot of time reading up on genetics, and now I'm learning about 3D printing. As part of my job, I travel around giving lectures on Eikholt, deafblindness and hearing. I think this is a lot of fun and contributes to a very varied working day.

Building operations

As a building operator at Eikholt, my job is to ensure that the buildings and facilities are in top condition. This ranges from the maintenance of buildings, technical installations and outdoor areas, and involves everything from day-to-day supervision and repairs to the planning and implementation of major maintenance projects.

A typical day might involve checking and maintaining heating and ventilation systems, carrying out minor repairs to buildings and equipment, and ensuring that outdoor areas are safe and well-maintained. As a building operator, I also need to be able to deal with acute problems that may arise, such as water leaks or electrical faults.

In addition to technical skills, it's important to have good communication and teamwork skills. On a day-to-day basis, I work with all the staff at Eikholt to ensure needs are met, and I need to communicate well with both colleagues and visitors. A "hello" and a quick chat means a lot, especially if it's someone's first time at Eikholt. I enjoy the job because it's varied and requires a combination of technical knowledge, practical skills and the ability to work well in a team.
