Eikholt has two national missions:

1.Adaptation course for deafblind people

Eikholt is assigned a national responsibility for NAV customisation course for people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness. This is a right under National Insurance Act. The right to customisation courses also applies to family members.

Eikholt offers:

  • Assessment and optimisation of visual and hearing function
  • rehabilitation in a lifecycle perspective
  • training in different forms of communication
  • testing and training in ICT
  • testing and training in mobility and orientation
  • Counselling, guidance and information for relatives and other service providers

2.Building expertise and disseminating knowledge

Eikholt has a nationwide assignment in the National Advisory Service on Deafblindness, through an agreement with Northern Norway Regional Health Authority. The mission is to develop and disseminate knowledge of importance to people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness. The target group is service providers in the health and welfare sector, people with visual and hearing impairment, carers, civil society and other relevant stakeholders.

Eikholt develops new knowledge and expertise through research and development (R&D) projects. An important principle for our R&D work is that the results should be useful for the target groups and strengthen the quality of adaptation courses for deafblind people. This means that project ideas are developed together with, or come from, people who use Eikholt's services. We are an approved research organisation by the Research Council of Norway. Eikholt is a member of professional networks and collaborates with user organisations and relevant professional environments in Norway and internationally. Knowledge is disseminated through teaching at universities and colleges, webinars, conferences and various publications.

Eikholt - a national meeting place

Eikholt is a meeting place for people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness and their carers. We place great emphasis on being a good arena that is characterised by our values: Safe, Competent and Creative. Through activities and socialising, people with deafblindness of different ages and life situations can share knowledge and exchange experiences.

A Eikholt course provides opportunities for meaning, community and increased quality of life.

Eikholt is also a meeting place for professionals and researchers. Some come together with course participants. Others are here as part of an educational placement, internship or in connection with projects. We also facilitate physical and digital meetings between professionals at conferences, workshops and seminars.
