Launch of Haptics: Pocket Edition at Eikholt on 5 December.

A long-awaited haptic communication app becomes available again - with global interest.

What happens on 5 December?

On 5 December there will be a launch of Haptics: Pocket Edition, an app that has been missed by users around the world. The app provides an overview of 144 haptic signals - a method of conveying information through touch. This is an important tool for people with vision loss and combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness.

The event will take place at Eikholt and we will be joined by Sail and Hapti-Cowho have been central to the development of the app.

Why is this launch important?

Haptics: Pocket Edition has users all over the world. Recently we received an enquiry from Helen Keller National Centre in the US, who asked for the app. This shows how important it is internationally.

The app was originally developed in 2020 through a project funded by The Dam Foundation, with National Association for the Combined Visually and Hearing Impaired/Deafblind (LSHDB) as an applicant organisation. It has previously been available for both iOS and Android, but has recently not been available for Android users. Now it's being relaunched on a new platform, with improved functionality and a new design - with the aim of being safe and accessible to all.

Collaboration for the future

"Eikholt is very pleased to have taken over ownership of the app to ensure further development. This is an important step in preserving knowledge and accessibility for users, carers and professionals.
