Communication with combined visual and hearing impairment

Eikholt is a resource and competence centre that offers courses for people with combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness and their carers.
The forms of communication are many
How is communication affected by combined visual and hearing impairment/deafblindness? How can you communicate when you can't see? How can you have a conversation when your hearing fails? What aids are available for communicating when both vision and hearing are impaired?
Both you and your carers may need to learn new methods and strategies to communicate well. Your needs may change over time. The opportunities are many.
A communication course can include training in techniques and strategies aimed at developing good communication skills. The course content is developed in collaboration with you and your carers. We involve local counsellors and other agencies when you wish.
Examples of course content:
- Vision, hearing and communication
- Braille
- Haptic communication
- Norwegian with sign support
- Transition from visual to tactile sign language
- Communication with all senses
- Use of interpreter/companion
- Communication in close relationships
