Group course “Us and the World” – Politics, Influence and Participation

Two groups have now completed the group course Us and the World . Politics, international affairs, advocacy and participation have been on the agenda during these intense weeks at Eikholt.

The course content is adapted to the groups, and participants have, among other things, tried their hand at being politicians and visited Parliament, and discussed current affairs both in groups and in plenary. They have worked with dilemmas related to Norway's relationship with the USA, China, NATO, and the EU. The groups have also delved into American politics and worked with topics that characterise the news at present. The course aims to provide increased insight into how the political system functions and how Norway relates to the rest of the world.

One of the highlights was that the participants sent two letters to the USA. One was sent to Donald Trump and the White House, and the other to the American embassy. Everyone is now eagerly awaiting a reply.

On the outside of the gate – a message of inclusion

During one of the visits to the Parliament, a creative stunt was performed. The course leader Sondre Varpe placed a figure with a walking stick and guide dog on the large LEGO model of the Parliament Building.

The Parliament building made of LEGO. Outside the Parliament building, many LEGO figures are demonstrating for various causes.
The LEGO model was created to mark the 150th anniversary of the Parliament building in 2016. It consists of almost 35,000 LEGO bricks and was built to a scale of 1:65 by certified LEGO builder Matija Pužar.

The figure stands outside the gate of the Parliament. At the same time, the placement points to an important challenge: Society, and also Parliament, is not always sufficiently adapted for people with combined vision and hearing impairments.

A Lego figure with a mobility stick and a guide dog stands outside the gate of a Lego building of the Storting (Norwegian Parliament). A Lego figure of a person in a wheelchair is making their way up a ramp.

Since the figure is now part of the permanent exhibition, we have secured representation for the deafblind in Parliament for many years to come.
